Vancouver Sun Run 2012

Wow!  What an adventure this year for the students of Blueberry School.  We were very fortunate to have 14 students, Mr. Patras and Ms. Lillico travel with 7 other schools from Parkland School Division to the 2012 Vancouver Sun Run.  There were over 100 students and supervisors in total from PSD who participated in this great event.

While the Sun Run served as the main focus of this journey, it was only one small piece of our adventure.  We began with the long journey from Stony Plain, Alberta on a coach bus early Friday morning.  While the bus ride was long, it served as a great opportunity for students from various schools to meet each other and interact.  There were many new friendships formed during the 14 hours it took to get to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Friday evening was fairly uneventful as we checked into the hotel and went out for dinner as a team before getting ready for a busy day on Saturday.  Saturday saw the Blueberry students join students from Stony Plain Central School as well as Woodhaven Middle School for a morning at the Vancouver Aquarium.

When asked “What did you think of the Aquarium?”  our students responded with:

“The aquarium was awesomely amazing”

“Interesting…hot…I like the tropical section”

While they may not be the most eloquent responses, our kids are certainly authentic!

We followed this with a leisurely bike ride through Stanley Park along the Sea Wall.  For many of our students this was their first time near the ocean and it was a great experience.

After our bike ride we returned to the hotel to change and prepare for an evening of shopping on Robson Street.  Students strolled Robson and enjoyed shopping and the company of each other.

Sunday morning brought with it the main event… the actual Sun Run.  Most students began with a lite breakfast from a nearby Tim Hortons before we made our way to the start line.  This was an experience in itself for our kids as we made our way to our start gate through approximately 49 000 people!  The students took pictures, talked, listened to the band near the start line and prepared themselves for the race.  One of our students, Kody Kisiloski was fortunate enough to be interviewed by a local T.V. station.  He represented our school with pride and enthusiasm.

All of our students completed the Sun Run, some running the entire 10 km, with others alternating between running and walking but it was a great experience for one and all!  While one might think that this would be the end of a great journey it was certainly not.  We returned to the hotel to shower and check out, and then departed to the Vancouver Aquatic Centre.  Students had the opportunity to enjoy a few hours of swimming or to take the Sea Bus to Granville Island for a bit more shopping, entertainment and food!

After swimming and shopping we departed for Kamloops where we would stay for the evening.  Sunday morning saw an early departure from Kamloops and lunch in scenic Jasper, Alberta.  Finally the finish to the long journey home.  We arrived back in Stony Plain early in the evening and said our goodbyes to friends new and old.

For those who were hoping for more pictures within this post you can be sure that there will be many submitted for the school yearbook!

The Vancouver Sun Run trip was a fantastic experience for students and staff.  I am already looking forward to next year and hope that we have even more interest from our students in grades 7-9!

Start thinking about joining in on the fun!
