Students and staff from Blueberry School just recently joined 11 other schools from Parkland School Division to participate in the 2013 Vancouver Sun Run and it was an amazing experience for all involved.
Approximately 160 students joined parents and staff members to create the largest out of province group attending this event, the Parkland Sun Runners. While on this adventure our students enjoyed many great experiences.
Biking through Stanley Park along the sea wall and spending time in the Vancouver Aquarium were the main activities on a busy Saturday. Students enjoyed riding the retro style bikes and seeing much of the aquatic life but perhaps the most fun was had while they were at the park playing “grounders” and soaring high into the sky on the swings! It was great to see a bunch of middle years students having fun and acting like little kids! Saturday evening provided an opportunity for students to explore the shopping along Robson Street and spend some time with teammates and new friends from other schools.
When Sunday morning had finally arrived students were excited for the run. Approximately 200 staff, parents and students took over the lobby of our hotel to gather and have one final pre-run conversation. Our students did a great job in the run and were looking forward to an afternoon swim at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre or a leisurely stroll through the Granville Island Market.
After a relaxing afternoon, our team began the long journey home. After an overnight stay on Sunday in Kamloops, Monday provided one final experience for our students in Jasper for lunch and a bit of last-minute shopping (if they managed to save any money:).
When we finally returned home on Monday evening it was finally an opportunity reflect back on what a great experience this had been for all of our students. Blueberry kids were fantastic citizens, role models and athletes during this adventure. I could not have been more proud of them during this trip.
I am looking forward to another Vancouver Sun Run in 2014 with another fantastic group of kids from Blueberry School and Parkland School Division. Until then, keep on running!
