What’s Happening This Week at Woodhaven – June 15-19

It’s hard to believe that this will be one of my last “What’s Happening” posts of the year! As always, this past week at Woodhaven Middle School was a busy one so here are just a few of the highlights.

Students in grade 7 shared their latest learning in the “Canadiana” Passion Project Gallery walk in our multipurpose room. We were honoured to have our Board Chair, Eric Cameron, Trustee Dorcus Kilduff and Deputy Superintendent Kelly Wilkins attend this event as well. I was able to see everything from projects on Snowblowers to Canadian Athletes.

During this presentation we experienced the positive power of social media first hand.  One of our students created a project on Natalie Spooner, a Canadian Olympic Hockey Player. When Mrs. Elsdon tweeted it out we got this reply!

Also last week, our grade 5 students and staff completed their Woodhaven Connects project. Their hot dog and freezie sale was a great success, with students lined up throughout the halls waiting to make their purchase! All proceeds went to the school library for the upcoming school year. Thanks to that team for their efforts!

Last week also provided an opportunity to begin to plan with our parents for the 2015-16 school year. We are excited that our grade 8 classes next year will be working in  a 1:1 environment. We shared with the parents in attendance, this presentation outlining the project for 2015-16. It was a great opportunity to discuss and engage our parents one more time before the conclusion of the school year!

Finally, students in grade 8 were engaged in poetry… yes, you heard me right. Grade 8 Middle School students were engaged in poetry… in June! Guest Speaker Ahmed Knowmadic  had kids engaged and excited about poetry.

As we look forward to the week coming up, we have field trips galore … trips to the Telus World of Science , Fort Edmonton Park and many others. This week will also see our grade 6 students writing their Provincial Achievement Exams and many other great activities.

I will conclude by encouraging you to read this blog post, by Mr. Glen Theil (Retiring Principal of Brookwood School) as he has provided not only a bit of wisdom gleaned over the past 20+years, but he provides motivation for the weeks to come!

Until next Monday.
